Turf football is the Indian city game

Full-sided football on grass is a club activity. What most people actually play is five, six or seven a side on rented artificial turf, in an hour-long slot booked days ahead and paid for collectively.

The appeal is obvious once you have done it: no maintenance, floodlights, a surface that survives the monsoon, and a game short enough to fit either side of a working day.

The regional cultures around it differ enormously. Football in Kerala, Bengal, Goa and the Northeast carries a depth of following that the rest of the country is still catching up with, and it shows in the standard of a pick-up game.

Evenings are contested, mornings are not

Turf demand is concentrated between 7pm and 11pm, which is when everyone finishes work. Those slots book out days ahead and cost the most.

Morning slots are the underused ones. They are cheaper, cooler for most of the year, and far easier to secure at short notice — the constraint is finding people willing to play at 6am, not finding turf.

Cost is split per head, so a game that is short of players gets more expensive for everyone who did turn up. That is the real reason hosts chase confirmations.

Pace and position, stated up front

A pick-up game works when people are honest about two things: how competitive they want it, and whether they will actually play a position or just follow the ball.

Turf shoes matter more than people expect. Studs meant for grass are wrong for artificial surfaces and are how ankles get hurt — most turfs will turn you away in them.

Coming alone is normal. Sides are made up on the spot, and the fastest way into a regular game is to be the person who reliably turns up when someone drops out.

What size games are most common?

Five, six and seven a side on rented turf. Full eleven-a-side games are mostly club and league football.

What shoes should I wear on turf?

Turf or astro shoes with short, dense studs. Long grass studs are unsafe on artificial surfaces and many turfs will not allow them.

How much does a turf football game cost?

The hourly turf rate divided between the players. Evening slots are the most expensive; morning slots are considerably cheaper.

Can I join a game alone?

Yes. Teams are picked at the venue and most open games are looking for players rather than turning them away.

Is football playable during the monsoon?

Artificial turf drains far better than grass, so games usually continue through the rain unless there is lightning.
