The planting takes a morning. Whether the tree lives depends on the next two years.

Plant in the monsoon or do not bother
There is a real window, and it is the monsoon. Saplings planted between roughly July and September establish themselves while the soil holds water; the same sapling planted in April is asking a volunteer to water it daily through 44°C.
This is why plantation drives cluster in a few months and why the ones announced in summer are usually more about the photograph than the tree.
Regional timing varies with the monsoon's arrival, so a drive in Maharashtra and one in Delhi NCR are not on the same calendar.
Native species, and why it matters
The most consequential choice on any drive is species. Native trees support local birds and insects, survive on local rainfall, and are still routinely passed over for fast-growing ornamentals that look good in year one and do little afterwards.
The Miyawaki method — dense, mixed native planting on prepared soil — has spread widely in Indian cities because it produces visible canopy on small plots quickly.
A drive worth joining can tell you what it is planting and why. If nobody can name the species, that is the answer.
Aftercare is the whole thing
Survival rates for plantation drives are frequently poor, and almost never because of how the sapling went into the ground. They fail in the following two summers, when nobody waters and nothing guards them from grazing.
The groups doing this properly organise watering rotas and tree guards, and count survival a year later rather than saplings planted on the day.
As a volunteer, the useful question is not what to bring on the morning. It is what happens in May.
Tree Plantation in India
When is the best time to plant trees in India?
During the monsoon, roughly July to September depending on the region, when saplings can establish without daily watering.
What should I bring to a plantation drive?
Closed shoes, gloves if you have them, water and a hat. Saplings and tools are normally supplied by the organisers.
Why do native species matter?
They survive on local rainfall and support local birds and insects. Fast-growing ornamental species establish quickly but contribute far less.
What is the Miyawaki method?
Dense, mixed planting of native species on prepared soil, used widely on small urban plots because it produces canopy quickly.
Do planted trees actually survive?
Only where there is aftercare. Watering rotas and tree guards through the first two summers matter far more than planting day itself.
