India does not have one hiking season, it has several
The useful thing to know about hiking in India is that the country is not on a single calendar. The Sahyadris in Maharashtra are at their best right after the monsoon, when the plateaus are green and the waterfalls still running. The Aravallis around Delhi NCR and Rajasthan are a winter proposition — pleasant from October, punishing by May.
The high Himalaya inverts it completely: the months that are unbearable on the plains are exactly when the passes in Uttarakhand and Himachal open up. The Nilgiris and the southern Western Ghats stay walkable across much of the year, and the Northeast has its own rhythm again.
So the question is rarely whether it is hiking season. It is which range is in season right now, and who near you is going.
You do not need a week off to hike
The assumption that hiking means a trip is what stops most people from ever starting. Every large Indian city has something within a couple of hours.
Bengaluru has Nandi Hills and the rock country around it. Mumbai has Sanjay Gandhi National Park inside the city limits and the whole Sahyadri escarpment behind it. Delhi NCR has the Aravallis, which start where Gurgaon and Faridabad end. Pune sits closer to good hill forts than almost any city in the country.
These are the hikes that actually build a habit, because they fit into a Saturday rather than a plan.
Finding people is harder than finding the trail
Trail information is abundant. What is genuinely hard is finding people whose pace, timing and idea of a good day match yours — which is why so many people who want to hike end up not hiking.
The two things that make a group work are stated up front: how fast and how far. A group that says neither is a group where somebody is going to have a bad morning.
Arriving alone is the norm. Most people at any trailhead in India came on their own and left having talked to someone for three hours, which is a thing almost no other setting makes easy.
Hiking in India
When is the best time to hike in India?
It depends entirely on the range. Post-monsoon for the Sahyadris, October to March for the Aravallis and the plains, and summer for the high Himalaya when the passes are open.
Can I hike near a big city without travelling?
Yes. Bengaluru has Nandi Hills, Mumbai has Sanjay Gandhi National Park and the Sahyadris, Delhi NCR has the Aravallis, and Pune is close to a large number of hill forts.
Do I need experience to start hiking in India?
Not for city-adjacent hikes, which are short and low-altitude. Himalayan treks at altitude need preparation and acclimatisation.
Is it safe to hike with a group I found online?
Join groups with a named host and a stated meeting point, make your own way to the trailhead, and tell someone your plans. Stick to daylight hours when you are new to a group.
How do I find people to hike with?
Open activities near you show the pace and plan up front, and joining alone is the ordinary case rather than the exception.
Do what you love.
