The Aravallis start where Gurgaon ends
Gurgaon sits against one of the oldest fold mountain ranges in the world. You do not have to leave the district to get onto rock and scrub: the Aravalli Biodiversity Park is inside the city, on land that spent decades as a mining site and is now walkable green cover.
Push further and the options open up. Mangar Bani, the sacred grove the surrounding villages have protected for generations, is the closest thing to old-growth forest in the region. Bhondsi and the ridges around Sohna give real elevation change, and Damdama draws groups wanting a longer morning with water at the end of it.
None of this is expedition terrain, which is the point — it is close enough that a hike is a Saturday morning rather than a trip you plan for weeks.
The calendar matters more than the trail
October to March is when the Aravallis are at their best: cool air, clear light, comfortable walking through the middle of the day.
From April the heat decides everything. Groups shift to dawn starts and are back before the sun is properly up — a hike near Gurgaon starting at 5:30am in May is not enthusiasm, it is sense.
The monsoon transforms the hills. The scrub greens completely and it is the most beautiful the range gets, but rock turns slick and snakes are more active, so groups stay on wider, better-known paths.
Your first hike with people you have not met
What goes wrong on a first group hike is almost never navigation or fitness. It is pace mismatch — one person pushing, another quietly struggling, nobody saying anything. Groups worth joining state a pace up front and mean it.
Coming alone is the normal case. Most people at a trailhead arrived by themselves, and a walk is one of the few settings where you can talk for two hours without having to perform.
Practical things that matter more than gear: carry more water than you expect to drink, tell someone where you are going, and wear shoes with real grip — the Aravallis are loose rock and gravel, not soft trail.
